Southern 50 Challenge

On 16 February Dan and Mike took part in the Southern 50 Challenge. This is a team event, raced over a 50 kilometre unknown route in the Chiltern Hills. To add to the challenge, each member must carry personal survival kit. The challenge tests their teamwork, stamina, commitment .... and map reading skills!

Dan and Mike were both using the event to raise sponsorship towards the cost of the Jamboree. Both were celebrating at the end, having achieved outstanding times and raising several hundred ponds at the same time.

Mike's team won the Ricky Bickley Trophy (awarded to the runners up in the Venture Scout 50km race) with a superb time of 8 hours 30 minutes.

Dan's team lopped over 9 hours off last years time by completing the course in 10 hours 48 minutes.

Three other members of the Surrey Contingent also competed in the event:

  • Frances and Steve Britain (both members of the Woking Contingent) who won the Grove Trophy (awarded to the fastest team in the 50 mile race with an aggregate age of over 130 years) in a rip snorting 13 hours and 28 minutes.
  • Chris Platt (1st Hinchley Wood and a member of Dan's Southern 50 team). Chris also used the event to raise sponsors.
